Perkins has conducted long-term programs of research and development in the areas of teaching and learning for understanding, creativity, problem-solving and reasoning in the arts, sciences, and everyday life. He has also studied the role of educational technologies in teaching and learning, and has designed learning structures and strategies in organizations to facilitate personal and organizational understanding and intelligence.
These inquiries reflect a conception of mind that emphasizes the interlocking relationships among thinking, learning, and understanding. His current research focuses on how classrooms change as teachers strive to make thinking valued, visible, and actively promoted in their classrooms.
His research explores inherent dilemmas of knowing, trusting, leading, and belonging in adult collaborative learning.
His work examines how groups navigate these tensions through using flexible language, routines, roles, and artifacts and is currently organized around three areas: Mark Church Mark Church has been an educator for twenty years and has a particular interest in helping teachers and school leaders think deeply about their efforts to cultivate thinking and learning opportunities for students.
He works with schools throughout the world, encouraging efforts to create rich communities of practice for professional learners. Her research focuses on the development of thinking and understanding, the role of close observation in learning, and learning in and through the arts.
She currently co-directs Agency by Design, a project related to the maker movement that is investigating the promises, practices and pedagogies of maker-centered learning. Past notable projects include Visible Thinking, a dispositional approach to teaching thinking that foregrounds the use of thinking routines and the documentation of student thinking, and Artful Thinking, a related approach that emphasizes the development of thinking dispositions through looking at art.

Clapp is a senior research manager and a member of the core research team working on the Agency by Design AbD initiative—an investigation of the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning—at Project Zero, an educational research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education HGSE.
In the past, Edward has worked with Project Zero on the multiyear research initiative, the Qualities of Quality: Understanding Excellence in Arts Education. Re-Inventing the Arts and Arts Education for the 21st Century, a collection of 20 essays about the future of the arts sector written by young and emerging arts leaders under the age of Edward holds a Doctorate of Education Ed.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Edward has also published his poetry and fiction in national and international literary magazines and has had his plays produced Off-Off-Broadway in New York. Her research focuses on the cognitive outcomes and challenges of interdisciplinary teaching and learning on students and teachers.
Sinceshe has been a researcher on the Interdisciplinary Studies Project at Project Zero, which examines the nature of interdisciplinary work conducted by researchers, funding agencies, higher education faculty and K teachers working in established programs and institutions.
She has worked on projects with the International Baccalaureate to document best practices in interdisciplinary teaching, learning and assessment, and developed practical frameworks and tools to guide quality interdisciplinary research and education for the Middle Year and Diploma Year programmes; with the Independent Schools in Victoria--Melbourne to research innovative 21st century learning frameworks and school models; and with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research CIFAR to understand the markers and conditions for successful interdisciplinary collaborations at institutions such as CIFAR, the MacArthur Foundation and the Santa Fe Institute.
